WPI-based inflation at 15.08% for the month of April, 2022; Food Index inches up marginally to 8.88%

The high inflation due to rise in prices of mineral oils, basic metals, petroleum & natural gas, chemicals, food and non-food products

Index Numbers of Wholesale Price in India for the Month of April, 2022 (Base Year: 2011-12)

The annual rate of inflation was 15.08% (Provisional) for the month of April, 2022 (Y-o-Y) as compared to 10.74% in April, 2021. The rate of inflation based on WPI Food Index increased marginally from 8.71% in March, 2022 to 8.88% in April, 2022. The high rate of inflation in April, 2022 was primarily due to rise in prices of mineral oils, basic metals, crude petroleum & natural gas, food articles, non-food articles, food products and chemicals & chemical products etc. as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year.

The Office of the Economic Adviser, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade released the index numbers of wholesale price in India (Base Year: 2011-12) for the month of April, 2022 (Provisional) and for the month of February, 2022 (Final). Provisional figures of Wholesale Price Index (WPI) are released on 14th of every month (or next working day) with a time lag of two weeks of the reference month and compiled with data received from institutional sources and selected manufacturing units across the country. After 10 weeks, the index is finalized and final figures are released and then frozen thereafter.

3. The month over month change in WPI index for the month of April, 2022 stood at 2.08 % as compared to March, 2022. The monthly change in WPI index for last six-month is summarized below:

4. Month over Month Change in Major Groups of WPI:

Primary Articles (Weight 22.62%):-The index for this major group increased by 2.70% to 174.9 (provisional) in April, 2022 from 170.3 (provisional) for the month of March, 2022. Prices of Food Articles (3.61%), Non-food Articles (1.20%), Crude Petroleum & Natural Gas (0.59%) and Minerals (0.13%) increased in April, 2022 as compared to March, 2022.

Fuel & Power (Weight 13.15%):– The index for this major group increased by 2.79% to 151 (provisional) in April, 2022 from 146.9 (provisional) for the month of March, 2022. Prices of Mineral Oils (7.58%) increased in April, 2022 as compared to March, 2022. Prices of Electricity (-9.68%) declined in April, 2022 as compared to March, 2022.

Manufactured Products (Weight 64.23%):-The index for this major group increased by 1.69% to 144 (provisional) in April, 2022 from 141.6 (provisional) for the month of March, 2022. Out of the 22 NIC two-digit groups for manufactured products, 18 groups have witnessed increase in prices while 3 groups that have witnessed decrease in prices. The increase in prices is mainly contributed by basic metals, chemicals and chemical products, textiles, machinery and equipment, electrical equipment, and food products. Some of the groups that have witnessed decrease in prices are motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers, computer, electronic and optical products; leather and related products in April, 2022 as compared to March, 2022. While the Manufacture of beverages remain unchanged in April, 2022 as compared to March, 2022.

5. WPI Food Index (Weight 24.38%): The Food Index consisting of ‘Food Articles’ from Primary Articles group and ‘Food Product’ from Manufactured Products group have increased from 167.3 in March, 2022 to 172.9 in April, 2022. The rate of inflation based on WPI Food Index increased from 8.71% in March, 2022 to 8.88% in April, 2022.

6. Final index for the month of February 2022 (Base Year: 2011-12=100): For the month of February, 2022 the final Wholesale Price Index and inflation rate for ‘All Commodities’ (Base: 2011-12=100) stood at 145.3 and 13.43% respectively. The details of all India Wholesale Price Indices and Rates of Inflation for different commodity groups for April, 2022 are at Annex I. The Annual rate of Inflation (Y-o-Y) based on WPI for different commodity groups in the last six months are at Annex II. The WPI Index for different commodity groups in the last six months is at Annex III.

7. Response Rate: The WPI for April, 2022 have been compiled at a weighted response rate 83 percent, while the final figure for February, 2022 is based on the weighted response rate of 92 percent. The provisional figures of WPI will undergo revision as per the final revision policy of WPI. 8. Next date of Press Release: WPI for the month of May, 2022 would be released on 14/6/2022.

For Kind Attention

The data collection of New Series of WPI (Base 2017-18) has also started with help of the Field Operation Division, National Statistical office, Government of India. The Industry Associations may ask industrial establishments (if selected) spread across the country to cooperate with the Survey Supervisor/Survey Enumerators of the NSO in collection of data since April 2017 on monthly basis.

Index Numbers of Wholesale Price in India for the month of December, 2021(Base Year: 2011-12)

The Office of the Economic Adviser, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade is releasing index numbers of wholesale price in India (Base Year: 2011-12) for the month of December, 2021 (Provisional) and for the month of October, 2021 (Final) in this press release. Provisional figures of Wholesale Price Index (WPI) are released on 14th of every month (or next working day) with a time lag of two weeks of the reference month and compiled with data received from institutional sources and selected manufacturing units across the country. After 10 weeks, the index is finalized and final figures are released and then frozen thereafter.

The annual rate of inflation is 13.56% (Provisional) for the month of December, 2021 (over December, 2020) as compared to 1.95% in December, 2020. The high rate of inflation in December 2021 is primarily due to rise in prices of mineral oils, basic metals, crude petroleum & natural gas, chemicals and chemical products, food products, textile and paper and paper products etc as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. The annual change in the components of WPI index and inflation in the last three months is given below.

Month over Month Change in Major Groups of WPI:

Primary Articles (Weight 22.62%):- The index for this major group declined by (-) 0.47% to 167.8 (provisional) in December, 2021 from 168.6 (provisional) for the month of November, 2021. Prices of Non-food Articles (4.59%) increased in December, 2021 as compared to November, 2021. Prices of Minerals (-6.10%), Crude Petroleum & Natural Gas (-3.19%) and Food Articles (-1.07%) declined in December, 2021 as compared to November, 2021.
Fuel & Power (Weight 13.15%):- The index for this major group declined by (-) 2.66% to 128.2 (provisional) in December, 2021 from 131.7 (provisional) for the month of November, 2021. Prices of Coal (0.38%) increased in December, 2021 as compared to November, 2021. Prices of Mineral Oils (-4.28%) declined in December, 2021 as compared to November, 2021. Prices of electricity remain unchanged.
Manufactured Products (Weight 64.23%):- The index for this major group increased by 0.22 % to 136.4 (provisional) in December, 2021 from 136.1 (provisional) for the month of November, 2021. Out of the 22 NIC two-digit groups for manufactured products, 16 groups have witnessed increase in prices while 5 groups have witnessed decrease in prices in December, 2021 as compared to November, 2021. The increase in prices is mainly contributed by manufacture of textiles; chemicals and chemical products; fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment; electrical equipment and motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers. Some of the groups that have witnessed decrease in prices are manufacture of basic metals; food products; computer, electronic and optical products; wearing apparel and beverages. While the prices of manufacture of rubber and plastics products remain unchanged in December, 2021 as compared to November, 2021.

WPI food index (Weight 24.38%): The Food Index consisting of ‘Food Articles’ from Primary Articles group and ‘Food Product’ from Manufactured Products group have decreased from 170.4 in November, 2021 to 169.0 in December, 2021. The rate of inflation based on WPI Food Index increased from 6.70% in November, 2021 to 9.24% in December, 2021.

Final index for the month of October 2021 (Base Year: 2011-12=100): For the month of October, 2021 the final Wholesale Price Index and inflation rate for ‘All Commodities’ (Base: 2011-12=100) stood at 140.7 and 13.83% respectively. The details of All India Wholesale Price Indices and Rates of Inflation for different commodity groups for December, 2021 are at Annex I. The Annual rate of Inflation (Y- o-Y) based on WPI for different commodity groups in the last six months are at Annex II. The WPI Index for different commodity groups in the last six months is at Annex III.

Response Rate: The WPI for December, 2021 have been compiled at a weighted response rate of 78 percent, while the final figure for October, 2021 is based on the weighted response rate of 94 percent. The Provisional figures of WPI will undergo revision as per the final revision policy of WPI. The Office of the Economic Adviser, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) is releasing Index numbers of wholesale price in India (Base Year: 2011-12) for the month of September, 2021 (Provisional) and for the month of July, 2021 (Final). Provisional figures of Wholesale Price Index (WPI) are released on 14th of every month (or next working day) with a time lag of two weeks of the reference month and compiled with data received from institutional sources and selected manufacturing units across the country. After 10 weeks, the index is finalized and final figures are released and then frozen thereafter.

The annual rate of inflation is 10.66% (Provisional) for the month of September, 2021 (over September, 2020) as compared to 1.32% in September, 2020. The high rate of inflation in September 2021 is primarily due to rise in prices of mineral oils, basic metals, non-food articles, food products, crude petroleum & natural gas, chemicals and chemical products etc. as compared the corresponding month of the previous year. The annual change in the components of WPI index and inflation in the last three months is given below.

Month over Month Change in Major Groups of WPI:

Primary Articles (weight 22.62%): – The index for this major group declined by (-0.58%) to 154.9 (provisional) in September, 2021 from 155.8 (provisional) for the month of August, 2021. Prices of Crude Petroleum & Natural Gas (-4.06%), Minerals (-2.34%) Food Articles (-0.25%) andNon-food Articles (-0.31%) declined in September, 2021 as compared to August, 2021.
Fuel & Power (weight 13.15%): – The index for this major group declined by (-1.12%) to 114.7 (provisional) in September, 2021 from 116.0 (provisional) for the month of August, 2021. Prices of Mineral Oils (-1.75%) declined in September, 2021 as compared to August, 2021. Prices of coal and electricity remain unchanged.
Manufactured Products (weight 64.23%): – The index for this major group increased by (0.60%) to 133.8 (provisional) in September, 2021 from 133.0 (provisional) for the month of August, 2021. Out of the 22 NIC two-digit groups for Manufactured Products, 17 groups have witnessed increase in prices; 4 groups have witnessed decrease and for one group the prices remained unchanged in September, 2021 as compared to August, 2021. The increase in prices is mainly contributed by manufacture of basic metals; food products; chemicals and chemical products; machinery and equipment; motor vehicles, trailers, semi-trailers; and fabricated metals. Some of the groups that have witnessed decrease in prices are manufacture of electrical equipment; computer, electronic and optical products; printing and reproduction of recorded media, and beverages in September 2021 as compared to August 2021.

WPI food index (weight 24.38%): The Food Index consisting of ‘Food Articles’ from Primary Articles group and ‘Food Product’ from Manufactured Products group have increased from 159.6 in August, 2021 to 159.8 in September, 2021. The rate of inflation based on WPI Food Index decreased from 3.43% in August, 2021 to 1.14% in September, 2021.

Final index for the month of July, 2021 (Base Year: 2011-12=100): For the month of July, 2021, the final Wholesale Price Index and inflation rate for ‘All Commodities’ (Base: 2011-12=100) stood at 135.0 and 11.57 % respectively. The Office of Economic Adviser, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) is releasing index numbers of whole sale price in India(Base Year: 2011-12) for the month of June, 2021(Provisional) and for the month of April, 2021 (Final) in this press release. Provisional figures of Wholesale Price Index (WPI) are released on the 14th of every month (or next working day), with a time lag of two weeks of the reference month based on data compiled from institutional sources and selected manufacturing units across the country. After 10 weeks, the index is finalized and final figures are released.

उद्योग एवं आंतरिक व्यापार संवर्धन विभाग के आर्थिक सलाहकार के कार्यालय ने जून, 2021 (अनंतिम) और मार्च, 2021 (अंतिम) के लिए भारत में थोक मूल्य सूचकांक संख्याएं जारी कर दी हैं। थोक मूल्य सूचकांक (डब्ल्यूपीआई) के अनंतिम आंकड़े देश भर में चयनित विनिर्माण इकाइयों से प्राप्त आंकड़ों के साथ संकलित किए जाते हैं और हर महीने की 14 तारीख (या अगले कार्य दिवस) को जारी किए जाते हैं। 10 सप्ताह के बाद, सूचकांक को अंतिम रूप दिया गया और अंतिम आंकड़े जारी किए गए हैं।

The annual rate of inflationis12.07%(Provisional)for the month of June,2021 (over June,2020)as compared to– 1.81%in June2020.The high rate of inflation in June 2021is primarily due to low base effect and rise in prices of mineral oils viz. petrol, diesel (HSD), naphtha, ATF, furnace oil etc, and manufactured products like basic metal, food products, chemical products etc as compared the corresponding month of the previous year. The annual change in the components of WPI index and inflation in the last three months is given below:

जून, 2020 की 1.81फीसदी की तुलना में जून, 2021 में मुद्रास्फीति की वार्षिक दर 12.07(अनंतिम) रही। जून2021 में मुद्रास्फीति की उच्च दर का कारण मुख्य रूप से कच्चे पेट्रोलियम, खनिज तेल, पेट्रोल, डीजल, नेफ्था, फर्नेस ऑयल आदि और विनिर्मित उत्पादों की कीमतों में पिछले वर्ष के इसी महीने की तुलना में वृद्धि होना रहा। पिछले तीन महीनों में डब्ल्यूपीआईसूचकांक और मुद्रास्फीति के घटकों में वार्षिक परिवर्तन नीचे दिया गया है।

Month over Month Change in Major Groups of WPI

Primary Articles (Weight 22.62%): –The index for this major group increased by 0.86 % to 151.8 (Provisional) in June, 2021 from 150.5 (Provisional) for the month of May, 2021. Prices of non-food articles (2.55%); crude petroleum & natural gas (2.33 %); minerals (0.98%) and food articles (0.31%) increased in June 2021 compared to May 2021.

प्राथमिक वस्तुएं (भारांक 22.62 प्रतिशत) : इस प्रमुख समूह का सूचकांक जून, 2021 के दौरान घटकर 0.86 % से 150.8अंक (अनंतिम) रहा जो जून2021 में 150.5(अनंतिम) था। जून, 2021 (मई, 2021 की तुलना में) में गैर-खाद्य वस्तुओं की कीमतों में 2.55%, कच्चे पेट्रोलियम और प्राकृतिक गैस में 2.33% और खाद्य पदार्थों की कीमतों में 0.31% की गिरावट आई।

Fuel & Power (Weight 13.15%):- The index for this major group increased by 2.90 % to 113.7 (Provisional) in June, 2021 from 110.5 (Provisional) for the month of May, 2021. Prices of Mineral Oils increased by 4.91 % in June, 2021 as compared to May, 2021.

ईंधन और बिजली (भारित 13.15%) : इस प्रमुख समूह का सूचकांक जून, 2021 में 2.90% बढ़कर 113.7(अनंतिम) हो गया, जो अप्रैल, 2021 के महीने में 110.5(अनंतिम) था। मई, 2021 की तुलना में जून, 2021 में खनिज तेलों की कीमतों में 4.91% की वृद्धि हुई। .

Manufactured Products (Weight 64.23%): The index for this major group increased by 0.38 % to 131.5 (Provisional) in June, 2021 as compared to 131.0 in May, 2021. Out of the 22 NIC two-digit groups for manufactured products, 11 groups have witnessed increase in prices,8groups have witnessed decrease in June 2021 as compared to May 2021 and for 3 groups the prices remained unchanged. The increase in prices are primarily contributed by the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, medicinal chemical and botanical products; basic metals; fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment; wood and of products of wood and cork and other non-metallic mineral products. Some of the groups that have witnessed decrease in prices are manufacture of tobacco products; motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers; paper and paper products; food products; and rubber and plastics products in June, 2021 as compared to May, 2021.

विनिर्मित उत्पाद (भारांक 64.23%) : जून, 2021 में इस प्रमुख समूह का सूचकांक 0.38 % बढ़कर 131.5(अनंतिम) हो गया जो मई में 131.0था। विनिर्मित उत्पादों के 22 एनआईसी दो-अंकीय समूहों में से, 11समूहों की कीमतों में मई, 2021 की तुलना में जून2021 के दौरान बढ़ोत्तरी देखी गई जबकि इसी अवधि के दौरान 8 समूहों में गिरावट दर्ज की गई और तीन समूह की कीमत अपरिवर्तित रही।कीमतों में वृद्धि का योगदान मुख्य रूप से फार्मास्यूटिकल्स, औषधीय रसायन और वनस्पति उत्पादों का निर्माण; बुनियादी धातु; मशीनरी और उपकरण को छोड़कर गढ़े हुए धातु उत्पाद; लकड़ी और लकड़ी और कॉर्क और अन्य गैर-धातु खनिज उत्पादों ने दिया है। चार समूहों ने कीमतों में कमी देखी है, तंबाकू उत्पाद; मोटर वाहन, ट्रेलर और अर्ध-ट्रेलर; कागज और कागज उत्पाद; खाद्य उत्पाद; और रबर और प्लास्टिक उत्पादशामिल थे।

WPI Food Index (Weight 24.38%)

The Food Index consisting of ‘Food Articles’ from Primary Articles group and ‘Food Products’ from Manufactured Products group have remained unchanged at 158.6 in June, 2021 as compared to May, 2021.The rate of inflation based on WPI Food Index decreased from 8.11 % in May, 2021 to 6.66 % in June, 2021.

डब्ल्यूपीआई खाद्य सूचकांक (भारित 24.38%)

खाद्य सूचकांक, जिसमें प्राथमिक वस्‍तु समूह की ‘खाद्य वस्‍तुएं’ और निर्मित उत्पाद समूह के ‘खाद्य उत्पाद’ शामिल हैं, इनका यह सचूकांक जो मई 2021 की तुलना में जून 2021 में158.6 अपरिवर्तित रहा। डब्ल्यूपीआईखाद्य सूचकांक पर आधारित मुद्रास्फीति की दर मई, 2021 में 8.11% से घटकर जून, 2021 में 6.66% हो गई।

Final index for April, 2021 (BASE YEAR:2011-12=100)

For the month of April, 2021, the final WPI and inflation rate for All Commodities (Base: 2011-12=100) stood at 132.0 and 10.74 % respectively. The details of All India Wholesale Price Indices and Rates of Inflation for different commodity groups for June, 2021 are at Annex I. The Annual rate of Inflation (Y-o-Y) based on WPI for different commodity groups in the last six months is at Annex II. The WPI Index for different commodity groups in the last six months is at Annex III.

अप्रैल, 2021 का अंतिम सूचकांक (आधार वर्ष: 2011-12=100)

मार्च, 2021 में सभी वस्तुओं का अंतिम डब्ल्यूपीआई और मुद्रास्फीति दर (आधार: 2011-12 = 100) क्रमशः 132.0 और 10.74% थी। जून, 2021 मे विभिन्न जिंस समूहों का अखिल भारतीय थोक मूल्य सूचकांक और मुद्रास्फीति की दरों का विवरण अनुलंग्नक I में दिया गया है। पिछले छह माह के दौरान विभिन्न कमोडिटी समूहों की डब्ल्यूपीआई पर आधारित मुद्रास्फीति की वार्षिक दर (वर्ष-दर-वर्ष) अनुलग्नंक II में दी गई है। पिछले छह माह के दौरान विभिन्न कमोडिटी समूहों का डब्ल्यूपीआई सूचकांक अनुलंग्नक III में दिया गया है।

Response Rate

The WPI for June, 2021 have been compiled at a weighted response rate of 73percent, while the final figure for April, 2021 is based on the weighted response rate of92percent. The Provisional figures of WPI will undergo revision as per the final revision policy of WPI. Index Numbers of Wholesale Price in India for the month of May, 2021 (Base 2011-12=100)

The Office of Economic Adviser, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade is releasing index numbers of Wholesale Price in India (Base Year: 2011-12) for the month of May, 2021 (Provisional) and for the month of March, 2021 (Final) in this press release. Provisional figures of Wholesale Price Index (WPI) are released on the 14th of every month (or next working day) with a time lag of two weeks of the reference month based on data compiled from institutional sources and selected manufacturing units across the country. After 10 weeks, the index is finalized and final figures are released.

The annual rate of inflation, based on monthly WPI, was 12.94% (Provisional) for the month of May, 2021 (over May, 2020) as compared to -3.37% in May 2020. The high rate of inflation in May 2021 is primarily due to low base effect and rise in prices of crude petroleum, mineral oils viz. petrol, diesel, naphtha, furnace oil etc. and manufactured products as compared the corresponding month of the previous year. The annual change in the components of WPI index and inflation in the last three months is given below.

Month over Month Change in Major Groups of WPI

Primary Articles (Weight 22.62%):- The index for this major group declined by 0.86% to 150.5 (Provisional) in May, 2021 from 151.8 (Provisional) for the month of April, 2021. Prices of Non-food Articles increased in May, 2021 (as compared to April, 2021) by 1.26%, Crude Petroleum & Natural Gas by 0.67% and Food Articles declined by 1.48%.

Fuel & Power (Weight 13.15%):- The index for this major group increased by 1.75% to 110.5 (Provisional) in May, 2021 from 108.6 (Provisional) for the month of April, 2021. Prices of Mineral Oils increased by 3.12% in May, 2021 as compared to April, 2021.

Manufactured Products (Weight 64.23%): – The index for this major group increased by 1.24% to 131.0 (Provisional) in May, 2021. Out of the 22 NIC two-digit groups for Manufactured products, 17 groups have witnessed increase in prices, 4 groups have witnessed decrease in May 2021 as compared to April 2021 and for one group the prices remained unchanged. The increase in prices are primarily contributed by the manufacture of basic metals, food products, fabricated metals, chemical & chemical products, and electrical equipment. Four groups that have witnessed decrease in prices are manufacture of other non- metallic mineral products; wood and of products of wood and cork; textiles; tobacco products , while the manufacture of rubber and plastics products remain unchanged in May, 2021 as compared to April, 2021.

WPI Food Index (Weight 24.38%)

The Food Index consisting of ‘Food Articles’ from Primary Articles group and ‘Food Product’ from Manufactured Products group have decreased by 0.19% from 158.9 in April, 2021 to 158.6 in May, 2021.

Final index for March, 2021 (BASE YEAR: 2011-12=100)

For the month of March, 2021, the final WPI and inflation rate for All Commodities (Base: 2011-12=100) stood at 129.9 and 7.89% respectively. The details of All India Wholesale Price Indices and Rates of Inflation for different commodity groups for May, 2021 are at Annex I. The Annual rate of Inflation (Y-o-Y) based on WPI for different commodity groups in the last six months is at Annex II. The WPI Index for different commodity groups in the last six months is at Annex III.

Response Rate

The WPI for May, 2021 have been compiled at a weighted response rate of 72 percent, while the final figure for March, 2021 is based on the weighted response rate of 91 percent. The Provisional figures of WPI will undergo revision as per the final revision policy of WPI. Index Numbers of Wholesale Price in India for the month of March, 2021

The Office of the Economic Adviser, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade is releasing index numbers of wholesale price in India for the month of March, 2021 (Provisional) and for the month of January, 2021 (Final) in this press release. Provisional figures of Wholesale Price Index (WPI) are released on 14th of every month (or next working day) with a time lag of two weeks of the reference month and compiled with data received from institutional sources and selected manufacturing units across the country. After 10 weeks, the index is finalized and final figures are released and then frozen thereafter.

INFLATION

Theannual rate of inflation stood at 7.39% (provisional) for the month of March, 2021 over March, 2020.However, month-on-month (March 2021 over February 2021) rate of inflation stood at 1.57 % (Annexure-I). The prices of crude oil, petroleum products and basic metal substantially increased in March 2021 as compared to the corresponding month of last year. Also, due to nationwide lockdown, the WPI index for the month of March 2020 (120.4) was computed with relatively low response rate.

The movement of the index for the various commodity group is summarized below: –

PRIMARY ARTICLES (Weight 22.62%)

The index for this major group increased by (0.55%) to 146.2 (provisional) in March, 2021 from 145.4 (provisional) for the month of February, 2021. Prices of Crude Petroleum & Natural Gas (8.64%), Non-food Articles (1.90%) and Minerals (0.35%) increased in March, 2021 as compared to February, 2021. Prices of Food Articles (-0.45%) declined in March, 2021 as compared to February, 2021.

FUEL & POWER (Weight 13.15%)

The index for this major group increased by (5.28%) to 109.7 (provisional) in March, 2021 from 104.2 (provisional) for the month of February, 2021. Prices of Mineral Oils (9.76%) increased in March, 2021 as compared to February, 2021. Prices of Coal (-0.08%) declined in March, 2021 as compared to February, 2021. Prices of electricity remain unchanged.

MANUFACTURED PRODUCTS (Weight 64.23%)

The index for this major group increased by (1.27%) to 127.3 (provisional) in March, 2021 from 125.7 (provisional) for the month of February, 2021. Out of the 22 NIC two-digit groups for Manufactured products, 16 groups that have witnessed increase in prices are manufacture of furniture; motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers; machinery and equipment; electrical equipment; computer, electronic and optical products; fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment; basic metals; other non-metallic mineral products; rubber and plastics products; pharmaceuticals, medicinal chemical and botanical products; chemicals and chemical products; paper and paper products; wood and of products of wood and cork; wearing apparel; textiles; food products in March, 2021 as compared to February, 2021. Whereas 5 groups that have witnessed decrease in prices are manufacture of other manufacturing; other transport equipment; printing and reproduction of recorded media; leather and related products; tobacco products in March, 2021 as compared to February, 2021. While the Manufacture of beverages remain unchanged in March, 2021 as compared to February, 2021.

WPI FOOD INDEX (Weight 24.38%)

The Food Index consisting of ‘Food Articles’ from Primary Articles group and ‘Food Product’ from Manufactured Products group have increased from 153.0 in February, 2021 to 153.4 in March, 2021. The rate of inflation based on WPI Food Index increased from 3.31% in February, 2021 to 5.28% in March, 2021.

FINAL INDEX FOR THE MONTH OF JANUARY, 2021 (BASE YEAR:2011-12=100)

For the month of January, 2021, the final Wholesale Price Index and inflation rate for ‘All Commodities’ (Base: 2011-12=100) stood at 126.5 and 2.51% respectively.

Note:

1. The WPI for March, 2021 have been compiled at a weighted response rate of 78 percent, while the final figure for January 2021 is based on the weighted response rate of 89 percent. The provisional figures of WPI will undergo revision as per the final revision policy of WPI.

2.Price Data are collected from selected institutional sources and industrial establishments spread across the country online through web-based portal maintained by the National Informatics Centre. PRIMARY ARTICLES (Weight 22.62%)

The index for this major group increased by 1.40% to 152.4 (provisional) in October, 2020 from 150.3 (provisional) for the month of September, 2020. Prices of Non-food Articles (2.37%), Food Articles (1.37%) and Minerals (0.66%) increased in October, 2020 compared to September, 2020. Prices of crude petroleum & natural gas remain unchanged.

FUEL & POWER (Weight 13.15%)

The index for this major group increased by (0.11%) to 91.1 (provisional) in October, 2020 from 91.0 (provisional) for the month of September, 2020. Prices of Electricity (4.26%) increased in October, 2020 compared to September, 2020. Prices of Mineral Oils (-1.93%) declined in October, 2020 compared to September, 2020. Prices of coal remain unchanged.

MANUFACTURED PRODUCTS (Weight 64.23%)

The index for this major group increased by (0.42%) to 120.3 (provisional) in October, 2020 from 119.8 (provisional) for the month of September, 2020. Out of the 22 NIC two-digit groups for Manufactured products, 13 groups that have witnessed increase in prices, are manufacture of food products; textiles; wearing apparel; printing and reproduction of recorded media; chemicals and chemical products; pharmaceuticals, medicinal chemical and botanical products; rubber and plastics products; basic metals; fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment; electrical equipment; machinery and equipment; other transport equipment; and furniture in October, 2020 as compared to September, 2020. Whereas 9 groups that have witnessed decrease in prices are manufacture of beverages; tobacco products; leather and related products; wood and of products of wood and cork; paper and paper products; other non-metallic mineral products; computer, electronic and optical products; motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers; and other manufacturing in October, 2020 as compared to September, 2020.

WPI FOOD INDEX (Weight 24.38%)

The Food Index consisting of ‘Food Articles’ from Primary Articles group and ‘Food Product’ from Manufactured Products group have increased from 157.6 in September, 2020 to 159.3 in October, 2020. The rate of inflation based on WPI Food Index decreased from 6.92% in September, 2020 to 5.78% in October, 2020.

FINAL INDEX FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST, 2020 (BASE YEAR:2011-12=100)

For the month of August, 2020 the final Wholesale Price Index and inflation rate for ‘All Commodities’ (Base: 2011-12=100) stood at 122.0 and 0.41% respectively.

Note:

1. The WPI for October 2020, have been compiled at a weighted response rate of 78 percent, while the final figure for August, 2020 is based on the weighted response rate of 91 percent. The provisional figures of WPI will undergo revision as per the final revision policy of WPI.

Index Numbers of Wholesale Price in India (Base: 2011-12=100)

Review for the month of May, 2019

The official Wholesale Price Index for ‘All Commodities’ (Base: 2011-12=100) for the month of May, 2019 rose by 0.2 percent to 121.2 (provisional) from 120.9 (provisional) for the previous month.

INFLATION

The annual rate of inflation, based on monthly WPI, stood at 2.45% (provisional) for the month of May,2019 (over May,2018) as compared to 3.07% (provisional) for the previous month and 4.78% during the corresponding month of the previous year. Build up inflation rate in the financial year so far was 1.08% compared to a build up rate of 1.72% in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Inflation for important commodities / commodity groups is indicated in Annex-1 and Annex-II. The movement of the index for the various commodity group is summarized below:-

PRIMARY ARTICLES (Weight 22.62%)

The index for this major group rose by 0.2 percent to 139.5 (provisional) from 139.2 (provisional) for the previous month. The groups and items which showed variations during the month are as follows:-

The index for ‘Food Articles’ group remained unchanged at its previous month level of 150.1. The items which showed decrease during the month are betel leaves (5%), fruits & vegetables (2%) and tea and wheat (1% each). The items which showed increase during the month are fish-marine (7% each), arhar (5%), urad, peas/chawali and bajra (4% each), egg (3% each), masur and moong (2% each) and gram, barley, ragi and fish-inland (1% each).

The index for ‘ Non-Food Articles’ group rose by 0.9 percent to 127.8 (provisional) from 126.7 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of floriculture and safflower (kardi seed) (6% each), raw rubber, hides (raw) and groundnut seed (4% each), linseed (3%) and raw jute, mesta, fodder, cotton seed, sunflower, raw silk and rape & mustard seed (1% each). However, the price of copra (coconut) (3%), skins (raw), soyabean and coir fibre (2% each) and gingelly seed (sesamum), niger seed and gaur seed (1% each) declined.

The index for ‘Minerals’ group declined by 4.2 percent to 138 (provisional) from 144 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of copper concentrate (14%), bauxite (10%) and zinc concentrate, manganese ore and chromite (2% each). However, the price of iron ore (14%), lead concentrate (2%) and limestone (1%) moved up.

The index for ‘Crude Petroleum & Natural Gas’ group rose by 3.5 percent to 92.8 (provisional) from 89.7 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of crude petroleum (5%) and natural gas (1%).

FUEL & POWER (Weight 13.15%)

The index for this major group rose by 0.6 percent to 103.4 (provisional) from 102.8 (provisional) for the previous month. The groups and items which showed variations during the month are as follows:-

The index for ‘Mineral Oils’ group rose by 1 percent to 96.4 (provisional) from 95.4 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of naphtha (4%), ATF (3%) and LPG, kerosene, furnace oil and HSD (1% each).

MANUFACTURED PRODUCTS (Weight 64.23%)

The index for this major group rose by 0.1 percent to 118.4 (provisional) from 118.3 (provisional) for the previous month. The groups and items which showed variations during the month are as follows:-

The index for ‘Manufacture Of Food Products’ group rose by 0.4 percent to 129.2 (provisional) from 128.7 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of groundnut oil (5%), gur, vanaspati and manufacture of macaroni, noodles, couscous and similar farinaceous products (4% each), chicken/duck, dressed – fresh/frozen , bagasse, molasses and powder milk (3% each), coffee powder with chicory, manufacture of prepared animal feeds, gram powder (besan), sugar, manufacture of starches and starch products, castor oil and butter (2% each) and processing and preserving of fish, crustaceans and molluscs and products thereof, processing and preserving of fruit and vegetables, honey, spices (including mixed spices), mustard oil, salt, basmati rice and rice products (1% each). However, the price of copra oil (3%), rapeseed oil, processed tea, maida and sooji (rawa ) (2% each) and palm oil, instant coffee, manufacture of health supplements, manufacture of processed ready to eat food, sunflower oil, rice bran oil, wheat flour (atta) and other meats, preserved/processed (1% each) declined.

The index for ‘Manufacture Of Beverages’ group declined by 0.2 percent to 122.5 (provisional) from 122.7 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of aerated drinks/soft drinks (incl. soft drink concentrates), bottled mineral water and spirits (1% each). However, the price of beer, country liquor and rectified spirit (1% each) moved up.

The index for ‘Manufacture Of Tobacco Products’ group declined by 1.6 percent to 152.1 (provisional) from 154.6 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of other tobacco products (4%).

The index for ‘Manufacture Of Textiles’ group rose by 0.3 percent to 119.7 (provisional) from 119.4 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of manufacture of knitted and crocheted fabrics (3%) and manufacture of cordage, rope, twine and netting and weaving & finishing of textiles (1% each). However, the price of viscose yarn (1%) declined.

The index for ‘Manufacture Of Wearing Apparel’ group rose by 0.5 percent to 139.2 (provisional) from 138.5 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of manufacture of wearing apparel (woven), except fur apparel (1%). However, the price of manufacture of knitted and crocheted apparel (1%) declined.

The index for ‘Manufacture Of Leather And Related Products’ group declined by 0.9 percent to 119.7 (provisional) from 120.8 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of chrome tanned leather and leather shoe (2% each). However, the price of travel goods, handbags, office bags, etc. (3%) and vegetable tanned leather and waterproof footwear (1% each) moved up.

The index for ‘Manufacture Of Wood And Of Products Of Wood And Cork ‘ group rose by 0.5 percent to 134.3 (provisional) from 133.6 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of wooden panel and wood cutting, processed/sized (2% each) and lamination wooden sheets/veneer sheets and particle boards (1% each). However, the price of wooden block – compressed or not (3%) declined.

The index for ‘Manufacture Of Paper And Paper Products’ group declined by 0.2 percent to 123.5 (provisional) from 123.7 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of newsprint (3%), laminated paper and base paper (2% each) and tissue paper, kraft paper, card board and corrugated paper board (1% each). However, the price of duplex paper and poster paper (1% each) moved up.

The index for ‘Printing And Reproduction Of Recorded Media ‘ group rose by 0.5 percent to 148.3 (provisional) from 147.5 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of printed labels/posters/calendars (5%). However, the price of sticker plastic (2%) declined.

The index for ‘Manufacture Of Pharmaceuticals, Medicinal Chemical And Botanical Products’ group rose by 0.9 percent to 125.5 (provisional) from 124.4 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of anti cancer drugs (25%), anti-retroviral drugs for HIV treatment (4%), vials/ampoule, glass, empty or filled (3%), sulpha drugs and anti inflammatory preparation (2% each) and vaccine for polio and antibiotics & preparations thereof (1% each). However, the price of antipyretic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory formulations (2%) declined.

The index for ‘Manufacture Of Rubber And Plastics Products’ group declined by 1 percent to 109.2 (provisional) from 110.3 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of plastic components and rubber components & parts (4% each), plastic box/container, medium & heavy commercial vehicle tyre and elastic webbing (3% each), tractor tyre and rubber moulded goods (2% each) and motor car tyre, PVC fittings & other accessories, polythene film, acrylic/plastic sheet, polyester film (non-metalized), rubber tread, solid rubber tyres/wheels, plastic bag and plastic film (1% each). However, the price of plastic button (5%), tooth brush, plastic furniture, plastic tube (flexible/non-flexible) and polypropylene film (3% each), processed rubber and conveyer belt (fibre based) (2% each) and plastic bottle, plastic tank, rubber cloth/sheet, 2/3 wheeler rubber tube and thermocol (1% each) moved up.

The index for ‘Manufacture Of Other Non-Metallic Mineral Products’ group rose by 1.4 percent to 118.4 (provisional) from 116.8 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of slag cement and pozzolana cement (4% each), ordinary portland cement (3%), porcelain sanitary ware and cement superfine (2% each) and clinker, glass bottle, graphite rod, asbestos corrugated sheet, railway sleeper and stone, chip (1% each). However, the price of ordinary sheet glass, toughened glass, marble slab, non ceramic tiles, lime and calcium carbonate, fibre glass incl. sheet, opthalmic lens and granite (1% each) declined.

The index for ‘Manufacture Of Basic Metals’ group declined by 0.8 percent to 109.7 (provisional) from 110.6 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of MS castings, aluminium disk and circles and mild steel (MS) blooms (3% each), sponge iron/direct reduced iron (DRI), aluminium ingot and MS pencil ingots (2% each) and ferrosilicon, hot rolled (HR) coils & sheets, including narrow strip, MS bright bars, aluminium shapes – bars/rods/flats, alloy steel wire rods, aluminium powder, stainless steel coils, strips & sheets, pig iron, GP/GC sheet, ferromanganese, copper shapes – bars/rods/plates/strips and aluminium alloys (1% each). However, the price of ferrochrome (3%), silicomanganese (2%) and steel forgings – rough, stainless steel bars & rods, including flats, alloy steel castings and MS wire rods (1% each) moved up.

The index for ‘Manufacture Of Fabricated Metal Products, Except Machinery And Equipment’ group declined by 0.3 percent to 116.9 (provisional) from 117.2 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of sanitary fittings of iron & steel (7%), electrical stamping- laminated or otherwise (4%), boilers (3%) and bolts, screws, nuts & nails of iron & steel, metal cutting tools & accessories, steel structures and cylinders (1% each). However, the price of bracket and steel door (3% each), forged steel rings, hand tools and pressure cooker (2% each) and stainless steel tank, jigs & fixture and steel pipes, tubes & poles (1% each) moved up.

The index for ‘Manufacture Of Computer, Electronic And Optical Products’ group rose by 0.4 percent to 111.4 (provisional) from 111 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of electro-diagnostic apparatus, used in medical, surgical, dental or veterinary sciences and meter (non-electrical) (3% each) and capacitors, air conditioner and sunglasses (1% each). However, the price of modems (6%) and electronic printed circuit board (PCB)/micro circuit (2%) declined.

The index for ‘Manufacture Of Machinery And Equipment’ group rose by 0.5 percent to 112.7 (provisional) from 112.1 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of deep freezers (9%), drilling machine and pressure vessel and tank for fermentation & other food processing (6% each), injection pump (5%), separator and rice mill machinery (4% each), open end spinning machinery (3%), air or vacuum pump and furnaces & ovens (2% each) and centrifugal pumps, soil preparation & cultivation machinery (other than tractors), air gas compressor including compressor for refrigerator, pharmaceutical machinery, oil pump, hydraulic pump, sewing machines, chemical equipment & system and filtration equipment (1% each). However, the price of conveyors – non-roller type (3%), dumper and moulding machine (2% each) and gasket kit, roller and ball bearings, cranes, manufacture of bearings, gears, gearing and driving elements and excavator (1% each) declined.

The index for ‘Manufacture Of Motor Vehicles, Trailers And Semi-Trailers’ group rose by 0.3 percent to 113.3 (provisional) from 113 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of brake pad/brake liner/brake block/brake rubber, others (3%), shock absorbers (2%) and piston ring/piston and compressor, wheels/wheels & parts, body (for commercial motor vehicles), shafts of all kinds, silencer and damper, chain, gear box and parts and engine (1% each). However, the price of axles of motor vehicles (2%) and cylinder liners (1%) declined.

The index for ‘Manufacture Of Other Transport Equipment’ group rose by 1.2 percent to 114.8 (provisional) from 113.4 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of motor cycles (2%), wagons (1%). However, the price of bicycles of all types (1%) declined.

The index for ‘Manufacture Of Furniture’ group rose by 0.1 percent to 129.4 (provisional) from 129.3 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of wooden furniture and iron/steel furniture (1% each). However, the price of foam and rubber mattress (2%) and steel shutter gate (1%) declined.

The index for ‘Other Manufacturing’ group declined by 0.1 percent to 106.3 (provisional) from 106.4 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of silver (1%). However, the price of non mechanical toys and stringed musical instruments (incl. santoor, guitars, etc.) (2% each) and cricket bat, football and plastic moulded-others toys (1% each) moved up.

WPI FOOD INDEX (Weight 24.38%)

The rate of inflation based on WPI Food Index consisting of ‘Food Articles’ from Primary Articles group and ‘Food Product’ from Manufactured Products group increased from 4.95% in April, 2019 to 5.10% in May, 2019.

FINAL INDEX FOR THE MONTH OF MARCH, 2019 (BASE YEAR:2011-12=100)

For the month of March, 2019, the final Wholesale Price Index for ‘All Commodities’ (Base: 2011-12=100) stood at 119.9 as compared to 120 (provisional) and annual rate of inflation based on final index stood at 3.10 percent as compared to 3.18 percent (provisional) respectively as reported on 15.04.2019.
