Introduction of Third Language (R3) in Class VI under CBSE Scheme of Studies 2026–27
CBSE/ACAD/2026
Date: 04.05.2026
Circular No: Acad-25/2026
All the Heads of Schools affiliated to CBSE
Subject: Compliance with Introduction of R3 in Class VI – Follow-up to Circular No. Acad-17/2026 dated 09 April 2026
Dear Principal,
This is in continuation of CBSE Circular No. Acad-17/2026 dated 09 April 2026 regarding the introduction of R3 (third language) in Class VI as per the CBSE Scheme of Studies 2026–27, in line with the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE-2023).

It is heartening to note that a large number of schools have already initiated the implementation by uploading their chosen R3 language(s) in the OASIS portal. However, it has come to the notice of the Board that certain schools are yet to update their R3 language options in OASIS and formalize the implementation, while a few have filled in the choices that are contrary to the policy recommendations.
The Board appreciates that some schools may require additional time to complete administrative arrangements. To facilitate smooth administrative and academic preparedness, the following may be noted for necessary action by schools:
1. As OASIS updation is mandatory, schools that have not yet uploaded their R3 language choices are requested to finalise and update the same in the OASIS portal at the earliest, and in any case, before 31st May 2026.
2. The schools that have filled the choices in contradiction to the Policy recommendation are being given another opportunity to modify the details in the OASIS, by 31st May 2026.
3. For scheduled languages (languages enumerated in the Constitution of India), the official R3 textbooks will be made available on the NCERT and CBSE websites before 01 July 2026.
4. In cases where a school chooses to offer an R3 language that is not a scheduled language of India, the Board advises that such schools may follow the SCERT textbooks or other state-recognised materials, as proposed by CBSE for Classes IX and X as well. Schools opting for such languages must ensure that the curriculum strictly adheres to the competencies prescribed in NCFSE-2023 (attached as Annexure I in Circular No. Acad-17/2026).
5. Schools that have not yet started teaching at least two native Indian languages (under the R1, R2, R3 model) as per the policy mandate may now commence teaching from 01 July 2026 without fail, strictly following the curricular goals and competencies prescribed in NCFSE-2023 (Annexure-1 of Circular No. Acad-17/2026).
All affiliated schools are once again requested to treat this matter with utmost priority. Regional Offices will continue to monitor compliance and extend necessary support.
