QUICK ESTIMATES OF INDEX OF INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION AND USE-BASED INDEX FOR THE MONTH OF MARCH, 2021(BASE 2011-12=100)

The Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) are released on 12th of every month (or previous working day if 12th is a holiday) with a six weeks lag and compiled with data received from source agencies, which in turn receive the data from the producing factories/ establishments.

2. For the month of March 2021, the Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP)with base 2011-12 stands at 143.4. The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of March 2021 stand at 139.0, 140.4 and 180.0 respectively. These Quick Estimates will undergo revision in subsequent releases as per the revision policy of IIP.

3. As per Use-based classification, the indices stand at 144.8 for Primary Goods, 103.0 for Capital Goods, 152.3 for Intermediate Goods and 154.3 for Infrastructure/ Construction Goods for the month of March 2021. Further, the indices for Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables stand at 128.9 and 155.2 respectively for the month of March 2021.

4. Details of Quick Estimates of the Index of Industrial Production for the month of March 2021 at Sectoral, 2-digit level of National Industrial Classification (NIC-2008) and by Use-based classification are given at Statements I, II and III respectively. Also, for users to appreciate the changes in the industrial sector, Statement IV provides month-wise indices since April 2020, by industry groups (as per 2-digit level of NIC-2008) and sectors.

5. Along with the Quick Estimates of IIP for the month of March 2021, the indices for February 2021 have undergone the first revision and those for December 2020 have undergone the final revision in the light of the updated data received from the source agencies. The Quick Estimates for March 2021, the first revision for February 2021 and the final revision for December 2020 have been compiled at weighted response rates of 86 percent, 93 percent and 95 percent respectively.

6. Release of the Index for April 2021 will be on Friday, 11thJune 2021.

Quick estimates of Index of Industrial Production and use-based Index for the month of January, 2020 (Base 2011-12=100)

The Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 2011-12 for the month of January 2020 stands at 137.1, which is 2.0 percent higher as compared to the level in the month of January 2019. The cumulative growth for the period April-January 2019-20 over the corresponding period of the previous year stands at 0.5 percent.

2. The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of January 2020 stand at 124.3, 137.6 and 155.6 respectively, with the corresponding growth rates of 4.4 percent, 1.5 percent and 3.1 percent as compared to January 2019 (Statement I). The cumulative growth in these three sectors during April-January 2019-20 over the corresponding period of 2018-19 has been 1.0 percent, 0.3 percent and 0.9 percent respectively.

3. In terms of industries, eleven out of the twenty three industry groups (as per 2-digit level of National Industrial Classification-2008) in the manufacturing sector have shown positive growth during the month of January 2020 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year (Statement II). The industry group ‘Manufacture of tobacco products’ has shown the highest positive growth of 22.8 percent followed by 14.1 percent in ‘Manufacture of basic metals’ and 9.0 percent in ‘Manufacture of furniture’. On the other hand, the industry group ‘Printing and reproduction of recorded media’ has shown the highest negative growth of (-) 16.3 percent followed by (-) 11.6 percent in ‘Manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products’ and (-) 10.6 percent in ‘Manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers’.

4. As per Use-based classification, the growth rates in January 2020 over January 2019 are 1.8 percent in Primary goods, (-) 4.3 percent in Capital goods, 15.8 percent in Intermediate goods and (-) 2.2 percent in Infrastructure/ Construction Goods (Statement III). The Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables have recorded growth of (-) 4.0 percent and (-) 0.3 percent respectively.

5. Details of item groups exhibiting larger variations in production in absolute terms and weighted terms are at Statement IV.

6. Along with the Quick Estimates of IIP for the month of January 2020, the indices for December 2019 have undergone the first revision and those for October 2019 have undergone the final revision in the light of the updated data received from the source agencies.

7. Statements giving Quick Estimates of the Index of Industrial Production at Sectoral, 2-digit level of National Industrial Classification (NIC-2008) and by Use-based classification for the month of January 2020, along with the growth rates over the corresponding month of the previous year including the cumulative indices are enclosed.

8. Release of the Index for February 2020 will be on Thursday, 9th April 2020.

Index of Industrial Production and use-based Index for the Month of December, 2019 (Base 2011-12=100)

The Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 2011-12 for the month of December 2019 stands at 133.5, which is 0.3 percent lower as compared to the level in the month of December 2018. The cumulative growth for the period April-December 2019 over the corresponding period of the previous year stands at 0.5 percent.

2. The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of December 2019 stand at 120.6, 134.2 and 150.2 respectively, with the corresponding growth rates of 5.4 percent, (-) 1.2 percent and (-) 0.1 percent as compared to December 2018 (Statement I). The cumulative growth in these three sectors during April-December 2019 over the corresponding period of 2018 has been 0.6 percent, 0.5 percent and 0.8 percent respectively.

3. In terms of industries, sixteen out of the twenty three industry groups (as per 2-digit level of National Industrial Classification-2008) in the manufacturing sector have shown negative growth during the month of December 2019 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year (Statement II). The industry group ‘Manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products’ has shown the highest negative growth of (-) 24.9 percent followed by (-) 20.3 percent in ‘Manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c.’ and (-) 15.5 percent in ‘Printing and reproduction of recorded media’. On the other hand, the industry group ‘Manufacture of basic metals’ has shown the highest positive growth of 14.2 percent followed by 13.2 percent in ‘Manufacture of wood and products of wood and cork, except furniture; manufacture of articles of straw and plaiting materials’ and 5.9 percent in ‘Manufacture of leather and related products’.

4. As per Use-based classification, the growth rates in December 2019 over December 2018 are 2.2 percent in Primary goods, (-) 18.2 percent in Capital goods, 12.5 percent in Intermediate goods and (-) 2.6 percent in Infrastructure/ Construction Goods (Statement III). The Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables have recorded growth of (-) 6.7 percent and (-) 3.7 percent respectively.

5. Details of item groups exhibiting larger variations in production in absolute terms and weighted terms are at Statement IV.

6. Along with the Quick Estimates of IIP for the month of December 2019, the indices for November 2019 have undergone the first revision and those for September 2019 have undergone the final revision in the light of the updated data received from the source agencies.

7. Statements giving Quick Estimates of the Index of Industrial Production at Sectoral, 2-digit level of National Industrial Classification (NIC-2008) and by Use-based classification for the month of December 2019, along with the growth rates over the corresponding month of the previous year including the cumulative indices are enclosed.

8. Release of the Index for January 2020 will be on Thursday, 12 March 2020.

Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production and Use-Based Index for the Month of July, 2019 (BASE 2011-12=100)

The Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 2011-12 for the month of July 2019stands at 131.1, which is 4.3 percent higher as compared to the level in the month of July 2018. The cumulative growth for the period April-July 2019 over the corresponding period of the previous year stands at 3.3 percent.

2. The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of July 2019 stand at 100.2, 132.9 and 169.7 respectively, with the corresponding growth rates of 4.9 percent, 4.2 percent and 4.8 percent as compared to July 2018 (Statement I). The cumulative growth in these three sectors during April-July 2019 over the corresponding period of 2018 has been 3.4 percent, 2.8 percent and 6.6 percent respectively.

3. In terms of industries, thirteen out of the twenty three industry groups (as per 2-digit NIC-2008) in the manufacturing sector have shown positive growth during the month of July 2019 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year (Statement II). The industry group ‘Manufacture of food products’ has shown the highest positive growth of 23.4 percent followed by 17.3 percent in ‘Manufacture of basic metals’ and 15.0 percent in‘Manufacture of wearing apparel’.On the other hand, the industry group ‘Manufacture of paper and paper products’ has shown the highest negative growth of (-) 15.4 percent followed by (-) 13.3 percent in ‘Manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers’ and (-) 10.9 percent in ‘Printing and reproduction of recorded media’.

4. As per Use-based classification, the growth rates in July 2019 over July 2018 are 3.5 percent in Primary goods, (-) 7.1 percent in Capital goods, 13.9 percent in Intermediate goods and 2.1 percent in Infrastructure/ Construction Goods (Statement III). The Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables have recorded growth of (-) 2.7 percent and 8.3 percent respectively.

Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production and Use-Based Index for the Month of April, 2019 (BASE 2011-12=100)

The Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 2011-12 for the month of April 2019stands at 126.8, which is 3.4 percent higher as compared to the level in the month of April 2018. The cumulative growth for the period April-March 2018-19 over the corresponding period of the previous year stands at 3.6 percent.

2. The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of April 2019 stand at 107.8, 126.6 and 162.9 respectively, with the corresponding growth rates of 5.1 percent, 2.8 percent and 6.0 percent as compared to April 2018 (Statement I). The cumulative growth in these three sectors during April-March 2018-19 over the corresponding period of 2017-18 has been 2.9 percent, 3.6 percent and 5.2 percent respectively.

3. In terms of industries, fourteen out of the twenty three industry groups (as per 2-digit NIC-2008) in the manufacturing sector have shown positive growth during the month of April 2019 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year (Statement II). The industry group ‘Manufacture of wearing apparel’ has shown the highest positive growth of 33.6 percent followed by 22.6 percent in ‘Manufacture of wood and products of wood and cork, except furniture; manufacture of articles of straw and plaiting materials’ and 16.3 percent in‘Printing and reproduction of recorded media’.On the other hand, the industry group ‘Manufacture of paper and paper products’ has shown the highest negative growth of (-) 12.3 percent followed by (-) 9.6 percent in ‘Manufacture of fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment’ and (-) 3.5 percent in ‘Manufacture of other transport equipment’.

4. As per Use-based classification, the growth rates in April 2019 over April 2018 are 5.2 percent in Primary goods, 2.5 percent in Capital goods, 1.0 percent in Intermediate goods and 1.7 percent in Infrastructure/ Construction Goods (Statement III). The Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables have recorded growth of 2.4 percent and 5.2 percent respectively.

5. Details of item groups exhibiting larger variations in production in absolute terms and weighted terms in Statement IV.

6. Along with the Quick Estimates of IIP for the month of April 2019, the indices for March 2019 have undergone the first revision and those for January 2019 have undergone the final revision in the light of the updated data received from the source agencies.

7. Statements giving Quick Estimates of the Index of Industrial Production at Sectoral, 2-digit level of National Industrial Classification (NIC-2008) and by Use-based classification for the month of April 2019, along with the growth rates over the corresponding month of the previous year including the cumulative indices are enclosed.

8. Release of the Index for May 2019 will be on Friday, 12July 2019.
