STATUS OF METRO RAIL PROPOSALS ACROSS THE COUNTRY
859. SMT. JEBI MATHER HISHAM:
Will the Minister of HOUSING AND URBAN AFFAIRS be pleased to state:
(a) the metro rail systems currently operational in the country, the number of cities that have submitted proposals seeking approval for new metro projects;
(b) the proposals that has remained pending for sanction, the reasons of delays;
(c) the number of proposals rejected during the last five years to date, the grounds of rejection;

(d) the metro rail projects approved during the last five years, the respective city populations at the time of sanction; and
(e) whether Government will remove the population criterion still based on the outdated 2011 Census, and whether it been uniformly followed?

(a) to (d) At present, about 1083 km of metro rail network including RRTS is operational in 25 cities across the country. It is submitted that Metro Rail Projects are cost intensive which requires extensive appraisal in terms of Metro Rail Policy, 2017 and the approval thereof depends upon feasibility of proposal and availability of resources & as such no timeline can be specified for sanction. The details of Metro Rail proposals submitted by State Governments to this Ministry during the last five years are enclosed as Annexure – I.
(e) As per Metro Rail Policy, 2017 cities having a population of two million and more may start planning for mass transit systems including metro rail based on the Comprehensive Mobility Plan.
