One Nation One Ration Card Scheme: Enhancing Food Security in India

The “One Nation One Ration Card” (ONORC) scheme is a transformative initiative by the Government of India aimed at ensuring food security for beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act (NFSA). This scheme allows over 80.56 crore NFSA beneficiaries to access their entitled food grains from any Fair Price Shop (FPS) across the country, regardless of their location. By utilizing biometric authentication through electronic Point of Sale (ePoS) devices, families can seamlessly lift their rations using the same existing ration card.

Key Objectives and Features:

The primary objective of the ONORC scheme is to facilitate nationwide portability of ration cards, thereby empowering individuals and families to access essential food supplies while on the move. This is particularly beneficial for migrant workers and their families, ensuring that they do not face food insecurity when relocating for work.

Technological Integration:

To implement the ONORC scheme effectively, the government employs advanced digital tools, including ePoS devices that authenticate beneficiaries biometrically. This technology enhances transparency and efficiency in the distribution of food grains, ensuring that beneficiaries receive their entitlements without hassle.

Coverage and Impact:

Currently, the ONORC feature is operational across all 36 States and Union Territories in India, covering 100% of NFSA beneficiaries. This extensive reach signifies the government’s commitment to providing food security to all eligible individuals.

Transaction Statistics:

As of now, approximately 3 crore portability transactions occur monthly under the ONORC scheme. This includes both inter-state and intra-state transactions, showcasing the scheme’s effectiveness in facilitating access to food grains for beneficiaries across different regions.

In summary, the ONORC scheme represents a significant step towards achieving universal food security in India, leveraging technology to ensure that every citizen has access to essential food resources, no matter where they are located.
