EMPLOYMENT GENERATION IN THE HEALTH SECTOR AND DEVELOPMENT OF MEDICAL TOURISM
SMT. DARSHANA SINGH:
Will the Minister of HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE be pleased to state:
(a) whether Government, keeping in view the high-quality human resources and health infrastructure available in the country, is making efforts to promote India as a global medical tourism destination;
(b) whether medical tourism can act as a job multiplier and provide employment to a large number of healthcare professionals and allied service sectors; and

(c) if so, the steps Government proposes to take to promote India as a health and medical tourism destination?
ANSWER
THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE

(a) to (c) : The Central Government has undertaken several initiatives to promote India as a global medical tourism destination. The medical tourism sector incorporates initiatives of several Ministries/Departments/trade bodies along with private sector hospitals. The sector can also act as a job multiplier and provide employment to a large number of healthcare professionals and allied service sectors.
Further, Ministry of Tourism (MoT) has informed that they promote India in a holistic manner, through various initiatives like promotion of various tourism destinations and products which includes medical and wellness tourism. The Ministry of External Affairs has informed that Indian Missions/Posts abroad promote India as health and medical tourism destination through sustained social media outreach and organizing seminars, conferences, workshops etc in partnership with stakeholders from host country. As part of India’s soft power and cultural diplomacy, Missions/Posts also organize flagship events on Ayurveda and Yoga such as International Day of Yoga, Ayurveda Day, to promote India’s ancient and holistic system of medicine and wellness. Additionally, the Ministry of Ayush (MoA) has informed that in order to facilitate international visitors seeking Ayush-based treatments, the Government has introduced a separate category of Ayush Visa. MoA has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), MoT to work together for the promotion of Medical Value Travel (MVT) in Ayurveda and other traditional systems of medicine. MoA has also organized two Ayush-based MVT Summits for promotion and propagation of MVT.
