8th Pay Commission: Government Confirms Formation Soon

For months, central government employees and pensioners have been waiting anxiously, asking the same question: When will the 8th Pay Commission be formed? Now, there’s finally some good news. The government has confirmed that the commission will be set up soon — and the long-debated Old Pension Scheme (OPS) is also on the agenda.

What Did the Government Say?

Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh recently met representatives of employee unions and assured them that the 8th Central Pay Commission (CPC) will be constituted in the near future. Alongside this, he also held talks with the Pension Secretary on issues linked to restoring the Old Pension Scheme.

This assurance came after a delegation of the Rashtriya Sarkar Karmachari Mahasangh (GENC), affiliated with the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), expressed concerns about delays and pushed for immediate action.

Why the 8th Pay Commission Matters

Every decade, a Pay Commission is formed to revise salaries, allowances, and pensions for central government employees. The 7th Pay Commission was implemented in 2016, and naturally, expectations are high for the next one. Employees believe the new CPC will not only increase basic pay but also address long-pending issues like rationalizing allowances and enhancing pension benefits.

Main Demands from Employees

The employees’ delegation put forward several key demands during their meeting, including:

  • End the delay in setting up the 8th Pay Commission
  • Abolish the National Pension System (NPS) and bring back a more secure Unified Pension Scheme (UPS)
  • Restore the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) for long-term retirement security
  • Release the 18 months of pending DA arrears that were frozen during the Covid-19 period
  • Ensure regular JCM meetings and a review of cadre/sensitive appointments

What Could Change in the 8th CPC?

Reports suggest the 8th Pay Commission might bring:

  • Increase in basic pay for employees
  • Higher pensions for retirees
  • Simplification and rationalization of allowances
  • Possible removal of some smaller allowances such as typing/clerical, special duty, or small regional allowances

When Can Employees Expect an Announcement?

With pressure mounting from unions and employees, insiders hint that the official notification may be issued within the next few weeks. While no exact date has been declared, the government’s confirmation has already brought hope to lakhs of families relying on central salaries and pensions.
