AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITIES

555. SHRI POCHA BRAHMANANDA REDDY:

Will the Minister of AGRICULTURE AND FARMERS WELFARE कृषि और किसान कल्याण मंत्री be pleased to state:

(a) the details of the total number of colleges in the country that offer Agriculture courses and the number of public/the Government colleges among them, State-wise;

(b) whether the Government has looked into the increasing demand for agriculture studies, especially in the areas of mechanisation and modernisation, including the invention of high- yield hybrid seeds, etc.;

(c) if so, the steps the Government has taken to increase the Government-owned agricultural universities;

(d) whether the Government plans to set up a Central Agricultural University that was to be established in Andhra Pradesh as per Schedule XIII of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014; and

(e) if not, the reasons therefor?

(a): There are 583 Colleges/Faculty/University that offer courses related to Agriculture & Allied subjects in the country as per following details:

  • 1. Public/Government Agricultural Colleges/Universities : 404
  • 2. UGC-Private Universities offering courses related to agriculture & allied subjects: 165
  • 3. UGC Deemed-to-be Universities (Private) offering courses related to agriculture & allied subjects: 14

State-wise list of No. of Public/ Government Colleges is attached in annexure-I

(b) & (c): Yes, Sir. To encourage the agricultural studies in the area of mechanization and modernization, Government has taken the following initiative:

The outreach centre of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)-Indian Agriculture Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi has been opened at ICAR-Central Institute of Agricultural Engineering (CIAE), Bhopal for Masters and Ph.D. programme in Agricultural Engineering. The Ph.D. programme at ICAR-CIAE started in 2014 and Masters programme in 2023.

ICAR-IARI, New Delhi which was earlier conducting Post graduate studies in different disciplines of Agriculture has also started under graduate program recently (since year 2022-23) in the discipline of

  • i) B. Tech. Agricultural Engineering;
  • ii) B. Tech. Bio Technology;
  • iii) B. Sc. Agriculture;
  • iv) B.Sc. Community Science.

So far, 77 Agricultural Universities (AUs) have been established to address the educational and research needs of agriculture & allied subjects including invention of high-yield hybrid seeds. Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) provides support for capacity building and strengthening of infrastructures in the Agricultural Universities (AUs).

(d) & (e): At present, there is no such proposal.

To cater the need of agricultural education & research, one well established State Agricultural University, namely Acharya N G Ranga Agricultural University is already there in the state.
