NO. 3519. SHRI GOPAL CHINNAYA SHETTY:
Will the Minister for HOUSING AND URBAN AFFAIRS be pleased to state:
(a) the date on which Swachh Bharat Mission was launched by the Union Government; and
(b) the details of the achievements made so far under the said mission?

SHRI KAUSHAL KISHORE
(a) : Government of India launched the Swachh Bharat Mission- Urban (SBM-U) on October 2, 2014 with the objective of making urban areas of the country Open Defecation Free (ODF) and for scientific processing of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) generated in the urban areas of the country. To carry forward the progress made, SBM-U 2.0 has been launched on October 1, 2021 for a period of five years with a vision of achieving Garbage Free Status for all cities through 100% source segregation, door to door collection and scientific management of all fractions of waste including safe disposal in scientific landfills and remediation of all legacy dumpsites.
(b) Details of achievements under SBM-U are as follows: (i). Toilet construction :

(ii). All 4,372 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) (except 1 ULB) of 35 States/ UTs declared themselves Open Defecation Free (ODF) in 2019. As on date, 3,547 ULBs have been certified as ODF+, 1,191 ULBs as ODF++ and 14 ULBs as Water+ under SBM-U. The process of ODF certification is done annually to prevent slippages of sanitation outcomes.
(iii). The scientific processing of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) in the country has increased from 17% in 2014 to 76% i.e. Out of 1.57 lakh Tonnes Per Day (TPD) of total waste generated, around 76% of MSW is being processed through Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs), waste to compost, waste to gas/elecctricity, construction and demolition waste processing etc. In addition, legacy waste dumpsites remediation has been taken up.
