Will the Minister of NEW AND RENEWABLE ENERGY be pleased to state:
(a) whether Government has initiated development of solar cities in the country: If so, the details thereof;
(b) the details of cities identified for implementation of the scheme in each State, district- wise;
(c) the quantum of funds sanctioned and released during the current financial year;
(d) the details of the action plan formulated to turn the present cities into solar cities; and
(e) whether the State Governments have been asked to provide a detailed report for implementation of this scheme, if so, the details thereof?

STATEMENT
Statement as referred in reply to Rajya Sabha Starred Question no 223 due on 16.03.2021
(a) & (b) The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy was implementing ‘Development of Solar Cities’ Scheme till 12th Five-year plan. A total of 60 Cities including 13 Pilot and 5 Model Cities were approved to be taken up under the scheme and State/UT-wise details of all approved 60 Solar Cities are given in Annexure.
(c) During the current financial year a sum of Rs. 2.00 lakh has been released as committed liabilities.
(d) & (e) The scheme ‘Development of Solar Cities’ was not continued beyond the 12th five- year plan (2012-2017). However, recently Government has asked all the States/UTs to identify at least one city in the State/UT to be developed as a ‘Solar City’. The city can be made green through the use of renewable energy including installation of rooftop/ground mounted solar, public transport with battery/hydrogen storage, etc. So far, 17 states/UTs have identified cities to be developed as ‘Solar Cities’.
