Subject: Observance of Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2026
Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2026 is being observed up to 2nd October 2026, culminating in Swachh Bharat Diwas on 2nd October 2026. The theme of SHS-2026 is “Swachhata Mein Sahbhag; Swachh Bharat, Viksit Bharat”, with a focus on a ‘Whole of Government’ and ‘Whole of Society’ approach. The campaign seeks to strengthen collective ownership and Jan Bhagidari for Swachhata, enhance participation of students and youth, and create awareness regarding the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.
The key focus areas of the SHS- 2026 campaign are:
i. Transformation of Cleanliness Target Units (CTUs) & Clean Public Places: Wherein difficult and dirty spots, high-footfall public places may be identified, mapped and cleared.
ii. Swachh Paathshala: Yuva for Swachhata: Engaging and sensitizing school students, youth for Swachhata through ‘Swachhata Gyan Yatra’- exposure visits to Solid Waste Management facilities and ‘Swachhata Evam Jal Sanchay Samvad’- interactions, debates, conversations on coming together for Swachhata, rainwater harvesting and water management.
iii. Jan Bhagidari for Swachhata: Door-to-door awareness drives and citizen engagement initiatives for awareness generation on SWM Rules, 2026 & promotion of 4-way source segregation & composting; Sports for Swachhata-local/regional sports competitions as a platform to spread the message of Swachhata as a way of life; Swachh Parv, Harit Parveco-friendly celebrations during festivities; Plantation drives under ‘Ek Ped Maa ke Naam’; Special activities on World Tourism Day (27th September 2026); Special Gram Sabhas and Special Council Meetings on Swachh Bharat Diwas (2nd October 2026).
iv. Swachhata se Samriddhi: Promoting and strengthening circular economy through ‘Kabaad se Jugaad- Waste to Wealth’ and ‘Kabaad se Kala- Waste to Art’; old books/toys/clothes donation drives/RRR; BWG connect through Plastic Recycling Melas.
Considering the significance of Swachhata in schools and role of children and youth in creating sustained behavioural change, the Campaign may be undertaken under the aegis of Eco Clubs for Mission LiFE. Schools where Eco Clubs for Mission LiFE have not yet been constituted may take necessary action to establish them.
Suggestive activities for the campaign are as follows:
i. Cleanliness and beautification drives in and around school premises, including Shramdaan and plantation, with appropriate safety arrangements;
ii. Swachhata Gyan Yatra/exposure visits of students, preferably Classes VI-XII, and youth to Solid Waste Management/Solid and Liquid Waste Management facilities and other SBM assets;
iii. Swachhata Evam Jal Sanchay Samvad/Swachhata Ki Paathshala/Swachh Talks on personal hygiene, handwashing, safe toilets, rainwater harvesting, safe drinking water, four-way source segregation, RRR, avoidance of littering and single-use plastics, wastewater management and key provisions of SWM Rules, 2026;
iv. Awareness/demonstration activities on SWM Rules, 2026 and four-way source segregation;
v. Promotion of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, including donation drives for books, toys, clothes, shoes and other reusable/recyclable items;
vi. Wall painting/thematic art and other competitions;
vii. Participation of MyBharat volunteers, school principals, parents and community members in appropriate activities.

A quiz on Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2026 has been hosted on the portal https://ecoclubs.education.gov.in for classes 6th to 12th students.
Further, this year also nationwide shramdaan, ‘Ek Din, Ek Ghanta, Ek Saath’ is proposed on 1st October, 2026, encouraging citizens to join hands for the cause of cleanliness. This will be an occasion where crores of people from various walks of life come together for focused shramdaan to contribute one hour of voluntary swachhata service.
