The government has launched many schemes to ensure that the situation of electricity supply in India improves and things are certainly getting better. Many of the remote villages have connected to the electricity now but many more are yet to be connected. This is certainly a point of concerned and a solution was required immediately. In addition to this, the solution had to be quick as the exams were around the corner. What is Right to Light Scheme Yojana?
Under the scheme, the government decided to offer free solar lamps to the students in some of the state. The government launched this scheme as the solar energy is never an issue and this was the easiest yet most economical way to deal with the problem on a temporary basis. The scheme was initially launched in a total of 5 states and the list of the states includes Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Orissa. In addition to this, the scheme was only launched for the school going students.

How Right to Light Scheme Yojana work?
The solar lamps would be distributed at the school levelthe and as per an estimate, over 1 crore students are to be benefited with help of this scheme. The electrification rate of these places where the scheme has been launched is less than 50%. The support for this scheme had been provided by IIT Bombay and they had been working on these amazing solar lamps which would be provided to the students. This also means that the cost of the lamps would remain low.

How to apply for Right to Light Scheme Yojana?
To apply for the scheme, the student needs to fill and submit an application form. This application form had been made available at Gram Panchayat, Zila Parishad, and Regional Electricity Board Office. One can obtain the form from the above-mentioned places and submit the form along with the documents and the fee.

The benefits of the scheme are
  • The student will get a cheap and safe source of light which would help them in studying.
  • This would also decrease the use of kerosene oil lamps which is certainly one of the most dangerous sources of light
  • The lamps are provided at a very nominal price and hence affordability had been out of the question.
Who will back Right to Light Scheme Yojana?
The plan is being backed by the central government but IIT Bombay is the taking care of the supply of these solar lamps. They are involved in the testing and manufacturing of the lamps as well.

Is this the way forward for the nation?
This is certainly a great scheme for the people as it would provide some temporary relief to the students and they will be able to give in their 100% to studies but this is certainly not the permanent solution. The permanent solution of the problem is the electrification of villages and the government would also have to ensure a 24 x 7 supply to these villages. This would certainly increase the rate of development in the country as well so the government should certainly launch schemes like Right to Light but the government should also speed of the work for electrification of villages.
